THE WEEKEND 5

Austin | September 25–27, 2026

Austin has plenty happening. These are the five plans we’d actually consider giving our weekend to: art across the lake, a theme park’s opening night, a Vietnamese night market, free local music and a vintage treasure hunt.

The planning move: See WaterWork Friday, choose one Saturday anchor, and keep Sunday for browsing. These plans are spread across town; give the one you pick enough time. Details checked September 23. All times are Austin local (CDT); check the linked organizers before leaving.

1 / WATERWORK

The lake becomes your art venue.

Friday + Saturday, September 25–26 · 8:30 PM

Projection-mapped artwork turns the historic intake building into a moving canvas. The useful part: you can see it from the shoreline without buying a boat ticket.

Best For: Date night + an only-in-Austin discovery
Cost: Free public viewing; parking and optional boat experiences extra
Why It Made the 5: A familiar piece of the waterfront becomes a reason to stop and look.

Know Before You Go: The organizer recommends Auditorium Shores and Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge. Arrive early for a sightline; nearby trail lots fill fast. We’d aim to be on the shoreline by 8 PM, with extra time to park and walk. The listed Palmer garage option is $12. Use the linked viewing map to choose your spot.

Worth Going take: Our first pick. Do Friday and leave Saturday open.

2 / COTALAND GRAND OPENING

Be there for day one. Budget for the whole night.

Saturday, September 26 · 4–10 PM
COTALAND at Circuit of The Americas · 9111 Circuit of the Americas Blvd.

A new Austin theme park opens with rides, a 4 PM ribbon cutting and a fireworks finale. This is the weekend’s biggest new opening—and its biggest spending decision.

Best For: Ride people + first-day curiosity
Cost: Official opening-day ticket: $99 plus taxes/fees, including unlimited dining and nonalcoholic fountain drinks. General parking: $30 per vehicle, before any additional charges.
Why It Made the 5: You only get one opening night.

Know Before You Go: Opening tickets were selectable when checked. Choose the September 26 Grand Opening product; regular-day prices are different. The $99 is a verified base price, not an all-in total—check the final checkout amount. Budget an extra hour for arrival, parking and screening; the park’s major-event guidance recommends arriving 60 minutes early. Ride availability and capacity restrictions apply.

Worth Going take: Go if being there first is part of the appeal. If value depends on maximum ride time, wait for opening-weekend reports.

3 / VACAT MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL + NIGHT MARKET

Make dinner the start of the plan.

Official VACAT Mid-Autumn Festival and Night Market flyer: September 26, 2026, 3–9 PM, 9400 Neenah Avenue. Free admission.

Official September 2026 flyer: VACAT.

Saturday, September 26 · 3–9 PM
9400 Neenah Ave. · northwest Austin

Come hungry for Vietnamese and Asian food, then stay for lion and dragon dances, cultural performances, áo dài fashion and the lantern parade. There are crafts, games and children’s activities, too.

Best For: Food curiosity + families + culture
Cost: Free admission; food, shopping and raffle tickets extra
Why It Made the 5: A night market with a cultural celebration at its center gives dinner somewhere to go.

Know Before You Go: VACAT’s current page and updated flyer confirm the hours and address. Its Eventbrite description still says “estimated” hours and “tentative” venue, so check the organizer’s latest update before driving. We couldn’t verify a timed stage schedule or parking plan; leave arrival room and don’t promise yourself a specific parade time.

Worth Going take: Our food-and-culture pick. Give it an evening instead of squeezing it between downtown stops.

4 / PRIDE IN LOCAL MUSIC

Your free Saturday-night music plan.

Saturday, September 26 · doors 5 PM · music 6–11 PM
Drinks Backyard · 6328 S. Hwy. 183

Melissa Carper headlines a night with Steph Cash, Maru Haru and Painterly, drag hosting by Maxine LaQueene & friends, a queer artist marketplace and a closing Bboy Wicket performance/DJ set.

Best For: Live music + community + a group hang
Cost: Free admission; food, drinks and shopping extra
Why It Made the 5: A full Saturday night of local music without a cover charge.

Know Before You Go: No ticket or paid Big Queer Weekend pass is needed for this showcase; RSVP is appreciated. This is the outdoor Drinks Backyard on South Highway 183. Doors open an hour before the music, with food trucks and a dog-friendly yard. ASL interpreters are confirmed.

Worth Going take: The easiest Saturday group-text answer. Pick a meeting time and settle in.

5 / CITY-WIDE VINTAGE SALE

Give Sunday a treasure hunt.

Official City-Wide Vintage Sale banner: September 26–27, Palmer Events Center, Saturday 8:30–5 and Sunday 11–5.

Saturday, September 26 · 8:30 AM–5 PM
Sunday, September 27 · 11 AM–5 PM
Palmer Events Center · 900 Barton Springs Rd.

Browse vintage clothing, furniture, décor and collectibles across 45,000 square feet of vendors. Go with one thing you’re hunting for and enough time to find something else.

Best For: Vintage people + a low-pressure Sunday
Cost: $10 + $0.83 sales tax online; children 12 and under free. Garage: $12 per vehicle. That’s $22.83 for one adult driving, before shopping.
Why It Made the 5: An indoor daytime option that gives the weekend a different pace.

Know Before You Go: Tickets are available and admission is good all weekend. Show your digital ticket to skip the box-office line. If Barton Springs traffic backs up, the organizer recommends the garage entrance on Riverside near South First. Only service dogs are allowed.

Worth Going take: Our Sunday pick. Share the parking cost and set a shopping budget before walking in.

IF WE WERE PICKING…

Best date-night discovery: WaterWork
Biggest new opening: COTALAND, if the opening-night premium works for you
Best food + culture plan: VACAT’s night market
Best free Saturday music: Pride in Local Music
Best Sunday browse: City-Wide Vintage Sale

Our two-plan weekend? WaterWork Friday, then VACAT Saturday. Add vintage on Sunday if you feel like getting out again.

That’s the Weekend 5. Five things we’d actually consider giving our weekend to.

Save this for later. Share it with the friend who always asks, “What are we doing this weekend?”
