THE WEEKEND 5
Austin | September 18–20, 2026
Austin has plenty happening. These are the five plans we’d actually consider giving our weekend to: a $15 way into Fantastic Fest, a run that turns into a recovery morning, Oaktoberfest, a new art foundation and a Sunday full of free museums.
The planning move: Pick one Saturday anchor and leave room for Museum Day on Sunday. This is a shortlist, not a five-stop assignment. Details and ticket availability checked September 16; check the linked organizers again before heading out. All times are local.
1 / FANTASTIC FEST
Sold-out badges. Still a $15 way in.

Venue photo: Heather Kennedy / Weiss Architecture · archival auditorium photography.
Friday–Sunday, September 18–20 · screening times vary
Festival runs September 17–24
Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar · 1120 S. Lamar Blvd.
Horror, sci-fi, fantasy and the kind of movies that make a post-screening conversation worthwhile. All badge tiers are sold out, but the festival’s official walk-up policy leaves a useful opening for people willing to be flexible.
Best For: Film people + spontaneous plans
Cost: $15 per walk-up screening, when seats remain
Why It Made the 5: You can sample a major Austin film festival without buying an eight-day badge.
Know Before You Go: Non-badgeholder tickets are released at the box office only 10 minutes before showtime, after badgeholders get priority. Admission is not guaranteed. The festival says major titles, including opening- and closing-night films, won’t have walk-up tickets. Check the film guide, choose backups and ask the box office about availability.
Worth Going take: A good bet if discovering something unexpected is the point. A shaky plan if your whole night depends on one specific movie.
2 / STOKE FIRE x CASA ELLEVATE
Official event flyer: Stoke Fire / The Pershing House, via Prekindle.
Saturday, September 19 · 10 AM–1 PM
Pershing House · 2415B E. 5th St., Unit B
An easy two-mile group run, recovery Pilates, sauna and cold plunge, with a DJ and time to hang around afterward. This is for the friend who wants to do something together before the day gets away from them.
Best For: Movement + meeting people + an active Saturday morning
Cost: $20 early bird; $22 general admission currently listed on Ora, including displayed fees. Tacos extra.
Why It Made the 5: The workout and the hangout are already in the same plan.
Know Before You Go: The run starts at 10 AM; Pilates follows. Bring your own mat and water. The live ticket page includes the run, Pilates, sauna, cold plunge and DJ. Early-bird tickets were selectable when checked September 16; prices and availability can change.
Worth Going take: Our pick if you want to move and meet people. Go for the whole morning instead of treating it as a quick class.
3 / 29TH ANNUAL OAKTOBERFEST
Polka, beer and a reason to gather the group.

Official Oaktoberfest artwork: Live Oak Brewing.
Saturday, September 19 · 11 AM–10 PM
Live Oak Brewing Co. · 1615 Crozier Lane, Del Valle
Live Oak’s annual celebration brings Austin Polka to the biergarten, stein-hoisting competitions, German food and barbecue, plus Austin Flea vendors and Oaktoberfest-themed tattoos. There’s a bounce house for kids, too.
Best For: Groups + beer people + a casual afternoon
Cost: Free admission; food, drinks, shopping and tattoos extra
Why It Made the 5: Enough going on to make a brewery hang feel like an occasion, without committing to a ticket.
Know Before You Go: This is the Live Oak brewery in Del Valle, so account for the trip. Sign up for stein-hoisting in the taproom. The overall event runs until 10 PM; don’t assume every vendor and activity keeps those same hours. Plan outdoor time with water and shade breaks.
Worth Going take: The easiest “send this to the group chat” pick. Choose a time to meet and let the afternoon take care of itself.
4 / OSTILLO ART FOUNDATION
Be there when a new Austin art space opens.

Saturday, September 19 · grand opening listed 6–9 PM
2600 Rosewood Ave.
A new contemporary-art foundation is opening in Rosewood with its inaugural exhibition, Masquerade. The campus brings together exhibition space, a public library and an open-air performance space.
Best For: Art curiosity + date night + discovering somewhere new
Cost: Free admission
Why It Made the 5: This is a new place to return to, with opening night as the invitation to get acquainted.
Know Before You Go: The grand-opening listing gives a 6–9 PM window; use that event listing rather than the foundation’s regular weekly hours. OSTILLO lists free on-site parking. Check its latest updates before leaving, especially for outdoor programming.
Worth Going take: Our most interesting opening this weekend. You don’t need an art-history background to be curious about a new space in your city.
5 / AUSTIN MUSEUM DAY
Pick two museums. Give Sunday a plan.

Official Austin Museum Day artwork: Breanna Carzoo / Austin Museum Partnership.
Sunday, September 20 · hours vary by museum
30+ museums and cultural sites across greater Austin
Free admission and special programming across the city make this the weekend’s easiest culture plan. Choose one museum you’ve been meaning to visit, then add a second nearby.
Best For: Culture + families + a low-cost Sunday
Cost: Free participating admission; parking and separately ticketed extras may cost more
Why It Made the 5: A useful nudge to finally go inside the places you keep saving for later.
Know Before You Go: There’s no single opening time or citywide reservation rule. The Blanton is open 10 AM–4:30 PM; Texas Science & Natural History Museum is open 1–5 PM, with last admission at 4:30 and no tickets required. The latter warns that capacity can mean an outdoor wait. Check your chosen stops’ hours and reservation requirements. The organizer also lists free CapMetro passes.
Worth Going take: Our strongest Sunday pick. Two museums you actually enjoy beat racing through five.
IF WE WERE PICKING…
Best for film people: Fantastic Fest, with a backup plan
Best active social plan: Stoke Fire x CASA ellevate
Best group hang: Oaktoberfest
Most interesting opening: OSTILLO
Best Sunday value: Austin Museum Day
Our two-plan weekend? OSTILLO Saturday evening, then a deliberately small Museum Day route on Sunday.
That’s the Weekend 5. Five things we’d actually consider giving our weekend to.
Save this for later. Send it to the friend who always asks, “What are we doing this weekend?”
