Hey, Don here.

This weekend, you can celebrate the library’s 100th birthday, eat your way through a downtown tradition, see reused materials become runway looks, or turn East Austin into a mini-golf course. Or spend an afternoon discovering independent makers at Palmer.

My free pick: the Library Centennial. Live music, hands-on activities and a reason to spend a Saturday at Central Library without buying a ticket.

A little extra this week: Markets for Makers has provided two pairs of VIP tickets for a Worth Going giveaway. Enter the VIP ticket giveaway → See pick 5 for details.

These are researched picks, not firsthand reviews. Details checked October 14. All times are Austin local. Check the linked organizer pages for availability before heading out.

01 / A birthday party for the whole city

Austin Public Library Centennial Party
Central Library · 710 W. César Chávez St.
Saturday, Oct. 17 · 10 AM–5 PM
FREE

Event artwork: Austin Public Library.

The library is turning 100, and the celebration goes well beyond a quiet afternoon with a book. Expect live music, printing-press activities, typewriters and creative projects throughout the building.

Best for: A free solo outing, a low-pressure hang or a family day.

Know before you go: PBS Family Fest runs 10 AM–1 PM. For an afternoon visit, the L’oca d’Oro cooking demonstration is 3–4:30 PM, and KUT’s ATXplained Project is 4–5 PM.

My take: The easiest yes of the five. Pick a couple of activities and build your visit around them.

02 / A downtown tradition with a $5 door

St. Elias Mediterranean Festival
408 E. 11th St.
Friday, Oct. 16 · 6–11 PM
Saturday, Oct. 17 · Noon–11 PM
Sunday, Oct. 18 · Noon–6 PM
$5 donation admission · Free Saturday before 4 PM

The 92nd annual MedFest brings Mediterranean food, music and community into one downtown stop. Make this your meal-and-a-night-out option, or use the Saturday free-entry window for an afternoon visit.

Best for: Friends who want food and atmosphere without a big admission bill.

Know before you go: Admission is separate from what you eat and drink. Kids 10 and under and college students with valid ID get free admission.

My take: Saturday before 4 PM is the value move. Friday is the option if your Saturday is already full.

03 / See what a second life looks like

Reuse on the Runway
Branch Park Pavilion · Mueller
Saturday, Oct. 17 · 5:30–9:30 PM
Standing general admission from $20

Past event photo via Austin Creative Reuse.

Austin Creative Reuse’s fashion, cosplay and drag show puts reused materials on the runway. The organizer promises more than 50 looks from over 30 local designers, with a chance to see the work up close afterward.

Best for: A creative date night or anyone who loves seeing how something was made.

Know before you go: Doors open at 5:30 PM and close when the show starts at 6:30 PM. Standing and seated tickets differ, so choose your ticket type carefully.

My take: My pick for the most distinctive Saturday night. The draw is the transformation, not just the clothes.

04 / Mini golf, but make it East Austin

East Side Mini Open
Participating East Austin bars and venues
Saturday, Oct. 17
Ticketed · Check current player-pass options

A neighborhood mini-golf outing with holes spread across East Austin venues. This is the pick for the friend group that wants to do something while hanging out.

Best for: A playful group afternoon with a little competition.

Know before you go: Check the organizer’s route, pass details and venue rules before committing. You don’t need to treat every stop as mandatory.

My take: Start with a manageable route. The organizer specifically recommended Grackle and Cavalier, and suggested Grackle around 3 PM to catch Nasty Mintz.

05 / Meet the makers behind your next find

Markets for Makers
Palmer Events Center · 900 Barton Springs Rd.
Saturday–Sunday, Oct. 17–18 · 11 AM–5 PM
Ticketed · Check current ticket options

Browse independent makers selling home décor, fashion, art and more, with a DIY station and tote bag included in admission. Make it a shopping afternoon with room to stop and talk to the people behind the work.

Best for: Friends who love discovering small brands, finding gifts and making something along the way.

Know before you go: General admission starts at 11 AM. Saturday VIP early access is 10–11 AM. Shopping purchases cost extra; check your ticket’s entry details before heading over.

My take: Go for the makers you want to meet and the things you want to discover. Set a shopping budget before you walk in.

VIP ticket giveaway: Two winners will each receive two VIP tickets, courtesy of Markets for Makers. Entry deadline: Friday, Oct. 16 at 10 AM Central. Admission only. No purchase, follow, tag or newsletter subscription required.
