There’s a lot happening in Austin this weekend. These are the five plans that made our shortlist.
1 / FOR THE DATE NIGHT
Latino Moonlight Serenades
Paddling Lady Bird Lake at night is already pretty Austin. Add live Latino music under the full moon, and this becomes one of the more memorable ways to spend Friday night.
Texas Rowing Center starts check-in at 6:15 PM and launches at 7 PM. You can go by kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard, and advance reservations are recommended.
Why it made the cut: It’s participatory, uniquely Austin, and gives you something more memorable than another Friday-night bar.
Worth knowing: Friday currently has thunderstorm risk. The event is weather permitting, and rainout reservations roll to the following month.
2 / FOR THE VALUE PLAY
$25 Lunch at Uchiba
Austin Restaurant Weeks starts Friday, and not every prix-fixe menu is automatically a deal.
This one caught our attention.
For $25, Uchiba is offering three courses: choose a starter such as Hama Chili, Sake Crudo, or Brussels sprouts; a main such as karaage, Ba Burger, Hot Fried Chicken, or Tiger Cry Bao; and finish with sorbet.
Why it made the cut: It’s one of the clearest low-cost ways we found to use Restaurant Weeks to try an established Austin restaurant without committing to a big dinner bill.
Worth knowing: Austin Restaurant Weeks runs Aug. 28 through Sept. 13, so you have more than one weekend to use this one.
3 / FOR THE CULTURE NIGHT
The Front Festival: Independent Film Night
Saturday night, The Front takes over Laguna Gloria for 12 independent Texas films by women and LGBTQ+ directors and writers, plus a community panel and performances.
Doors open at 7 PM, with the program running through 11 PM. One-day Film Showcase passes range from $20–$40.
Why it made the cut: It feels rooted in Austin’s actual creative community, not like something touring through town that happens to stop here.
Worth knowing: This one is outdoors at Laguna Gloria, so plan for a very hot Saturday evening.
4 / FOR TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Come Dance! at Ballet Austin
Ballet Austin is opening its downtown studios Sunday for an afternoon of free adult dance classes.
The lineup includes everything from hip-hop, R&B, heels, AfroBeats, and line dancing to ballet, jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary. It runs 1–5:45 PM, no previous dance experience is required, and ages 16+ are welcome.
Why it made the cut: Free, participatory, social, and a much better Sunday answer than automatically defaulting to brunch again.
Worth knowing: Sign up for classes in advance. Ballet Austin expects many of them to fill. They’re also offering free parking at State Garage N.
5 / FOR EATING IRRESPONSIBLY
Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival
Austin’s Hot Sauce Festival turns 36 this year and moves to Radio/East on Sunday.
Expect hundreds of hot sauce tastings, food trucks, cold drinks, live music, the Hot Sauce Competition, and People’s Choice voting.
It runs 3–9 PM. Tickets are $20 presale / $25 at the door, with part of ticket proceeds benefiting Central Texas Food Bank.
Why it made the cut: It’s one of those Austin traditions where there’s actually something to taste, vote on, argue about, and remember afterward.
Worth knowing: There’s no public event parking in the Radio/East lot, so rideshare, carpool, or transit is the smarter move.
NEW IN AUSTIN
Roccito’s
There’s a new 35-seat wine garden hidden behind Rocco’s on Airport Boulevard, built around wine, cocktails, antipasti, olive trees, and hanging out for a while. It’s walk-in only and currently operating Thursday through Sunday.
Why it’s on our radar: The whole concept is less “new restaurant” and more potential date-night / third-place hang.
Worth Going hasn’t given it a verdict yet. We’re checking it out ourselves.
