THE WEEKEND 5
Austin | September 11–13, 2026
Austin has plenty happening. These are the five plans we’d actually consider giving our weekend to: floating DJs, kung fu cowboys, El Grito, a fried-chicken opening and a city full of live music.
A heads-up: As of September 9, Saturday’s forecast is around 100°F. Plan outdoor time with water, sun protection and breaks in mind, and check the forecast again before heading out.
1 / PARTY ISLAND ATX
A floating DJ party on Lady Bird Lake?

Saturday, September 12 · noon–4 PM
On Lady Bird Lake near Lou Neff Point
Fake DJs and Dustnem are bringing four hours of bass house and tech house to the water. Bring a paddleboard or kayak, gather the friends who are up for something different, and find the music.
Best For: Friends + a very Austin afternoon
Cost: Free admission; watercraft rental extra. The organizer lists a $40 all-day Texas Rowing Center paddleboard/kayak deal.
Why It Made the 5: A dance floor you paddle to earns our attention.
Know Before You Go: This is a midday outdoor plan. Bring water and sun protection, arrange your watercraft first, and check the organizer’s updates before leaving. Free snacks are available while they last.
Worth Going take: If your group is comfortable getting on the water, this is the weekend’s biggest “wait, Austin has this?” plan.
2 / KUNG FU COWGIRL
Kung fu + cowboys + a barbecue battle?

Saturday, September 12 + Sunday, September 13 · 8 PM
Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater
An original Austin musical mixing martial arts, rodeo games, lasso work and a Chinese-versus-Texas barbecue showdown—with funk, jazz, rap and Broadway in the mix. Somehow, all of that is one show.
Best For: Date night + culture + families
Cost: Free
Why It Made the 5: This is the wonderfully weird programming that makes an Austin weekend interesting.
Know Before You Go: Come at 7 PM Saturday for The Dropouts’ free live-music preshow; Sunday’s 7 PM preshow is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu demonstration. Bring a blanket. Performances and free Polo Field parking are weather permitting; check the production’s updates before leaving.
Worth Going take: Even if you normally scroll past theater, the premise earns this one a look.
3 / VIVA MÉXICO
Austin celebrates Mexican independence

Venue photo: Bud Franck · shared by Miró Rivera Architects and ESB-MACC, September 4, 2026.
Saturday, September 12 · 4–9 PM
Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center · 600 River St.
The MACC’s 19th annual celebration brings together live music, folklórico, food vendors, a market, children’s activities and El Grito.
Best For: Culture + groups + families
Cost: Free admission; food and shopping extra
Why It Made the 5: One of the weekend’s strongest community celebrations, with enough programming to build your evening around.
Know Before You Go: For the evening performances, we’d arrive around 6:15 PM: Ballet Folklórico de Austin at 6:30, Latin Breed at 7, El Grito and the national anthem at 8:15, Mariachi Alma Mexicana at 8:30, then the grand finale at 9. It’s alcohol-free; bring a water bottle. The MACC lists free cold water and cooling rooms on site.
Worth Going take: Our culture pick. Arrive earlier if the children’s activities and vendor market are part of your plan.
4 / BEN & LYNN’S
Joshua Weissman’s first restaurant opens

Opens Saturday, September 12 · 11:30 AM
2600 E. Cesar Chavez St.
The Austin-based food creator is opening a fried-chicken restaurant. For people who have followed his cooking online, this is the chance to see what that looks like across a counter.
Best For: Food people + opening-day curiosity
Cost: Menu items priced separately. Reported prices include an $11.95 classic sandwich and $4 fries, before tax.
Why It Made the 5: It’s an opening with a clear reason to be curious.
Know Before You Go: The official announcement confirms an 11:30 AM opening. We’d plan for opening-day lines, though waits are not yet known. We haven’t eaten there, so this is a recommendation to consider the opening—not a verdict on the food.
Worth Going take: Opening day is for people who enjoy being early. If lines ruin lunch for you, waiting may be the smarter move.
5 / LEVITATION
Choose your own music weekend

Official LEVITATION poster · shared September 2, 2026. The “low tickets” badge is outdated; Friday single-day tickets are now sold out.
Thursday, September 10–Sunday, September 13
The Far Out Lounge + venues across Austin
Psych, punk, indie, metal, electronic and plenty between: LEVITATION turns the weekend into a choose-your-own-adventure music plan, with The Far Out Lounge as its central hub and club shows around town.
Best For: Music people + a deliberately planned night
Cost: Varies by show and pass; check live ticket availability.
Why It Made the 5: You can build the weekend around the music you care about.
Know Before You Go: Pick one or two shows first, then check the exact venue, set times and ticket terms. Friday’s Bikini Kill / Die Spitz show at The Far Out is sold out as a single-day ticket; the organizer says limited three-day passes remain. Some older listings still say Radio/East—use the current official schedule and ticket page.
Worth Going take: Don’t try to do everything. One great night beats spending the weekend in transit.
IF WE WERE PICKING…
Most uniquely Austin: Party Island
Best free wildcard: Kung Fu Cowgirl
Best culture pick: Viva México
Most curious opening: Ben & Lynn’s
Best for music: LEVITATION
That’s the Weekend 5. Five things we’d actually consider giving our weekend to.
Save this for later. Send it to the friend who always asks, “What are we doing this weekend?”
